MycoBrain vs MycoBrain Prime vs MycoMatrix: Which One Is Right for You?
One of the questions we receive most often is:
“What is the difference between MycoBrain, MycoBrain Prime and MycoMatrix—and which one should I use?”
It is an understandable question. All three contain functional mushroom extracts, and all three contain Lion’s Mane. However, they were developed for different purposes.
The simplest explanation is this:
- MycoBrain is a focused Lion’s Mane fruiting-body extract.
- MycoBrain Prime combines Lion’s Mane fruiting body and mycelium for broader Lion’s Mane compound coverage.
- MycoMatrix combines six different mushrooms for broader whole-body support.
It is therefore not simply a question of which product is “strongest.” The better question is: What are you hoping to support?
The quick comparison
| Product | What it contains | Primary focus | Typical daily use |
|---|---|---|---|
| MycoBrain | Lion’s Mane fruiting-body extract | Everyday focus, clarity and cognitive support | 2 capsules daily; range 1–3 |
| MycoBrain Prime | Lion’s Mane fruiting body and mycelium | More comprehensive Lion’s Mane support | 2 capsules daily; range 1–3 |
| MycoMatrix | Six functional mushroom extracts | Broader daily support across multiple systems | 2–4 capsules daily |
What is MycoBrain?
MycoBrain contains 500 mg of dual-extracted Lion’s Mane fruiting body per capsule. It is a straightforward option for someone who wants to introduce Lion’s Mane into their daily routine without adding several different mushrooms.
Lion’s Mane is unusual because different parts of the mushroom contain different naturally occurring compounds. The fruiting body—the visible mushroom—contains compounds known as hericenones, as well as beta-glucans and other constituents.
MycoBrain may be the best starting point if you are looking for:
- Everyday mental clarity
- Focus during work or study
- Memory and cognitive support
- A fruiting-body-only Lion’s Mane product
- A simpler, more affordable introduction to functional mushrooms
If you are new to Lion’s Mane and want a focused product rather than a blend, MycoBrain is usually the most logical place to begin. The current product is available in both 60- and 180-capsule options. View MycoBrain.
What makes MycoBrain Prime different?
MycoBrain Prime is still a Lion’s Mane product, but it contains extracts from both the fruiting body and the mycelium.
Why does that matter?
The fruiting body and mycelium do not have identical chemical profiles. While hericenones are associated primarily with the fruiting body, compounds called erinacines are associated with the mycelium.
Our independently analysed raw extract measured:
- Erinacines: 2.95%
- Hericenones: 0.423%
This is why we describe Prime as our more comprehensive Lion’s Mane formulation. It is not simply a larger dose of MycoBrain. It is designed to provide compounds from both major parts of the fungus.
MycoBrain Prime may be the better choice if:
- You want broader Lion’s Mane compound coverage
- Cognitive support is your main priority
- You want both fruiting-body and mycelium extracts
- You have already used a standard Lion’s Mane product and want to move to the more comprehensive formulation
Like MycoBrain, each capsule contains 500 mg, with two capsules being the usual daily dose. View MycoBrain Prime.
What is MycoMatrix?
MycoMatrix is quite different. Although it contains Lion’s Mane, it is not primarily a Lion’s Mane product.
A full four-capsule serving provides approximately 2,000 mg of mushroom extracts, made up of approximately 333 mg each of:
- Lion’s Mane
- Reishi
- Maitake
- Cordyceps militaris
- Chaga
- Turkey Tail
Each mushroom has its own combination of beta-glucans, polysaccharides and other naturally occurring compounds. The purpose of MycoMatrix is therefore variety and breadth, rather than delivering a concentrated amount of one particular mushroom.
MycoMatrix may suit someone looking for:
- A broad daily functional-mushroom blend
- General energy and resilience support
- Immune-system support
- Antioxidant support
- A convenient way to use several mushrooms together
- Something that extends beyond cognition alone
The full serving contains considerably less Lion’s Mane than two capsules of either MycoBrain product. That is intentional: Lion’s Mane is only one part of the six-mushroom formulation. View MycoMatrix.
MycoBrain or MycoBrain Prime?
Choose MycoBrain if you want a focused, fruiting-body-only Lion’s Mane extract and a simple starting point.
Choose MycoBrain Prime if cognitive support remains your main goal, but you want Lion’s Mane extracts from both the fruiting body and mycelium.
Prime should not be described as automatically “better” for everyone. Someone who specifically prefers a fruiting-body-only extract may still choose MycoBrain. The two products serve slightly different preferences.
MycoBrain Prime or MycoMatrix?
This is where most of the confusion occurs.
Choose MycoBrain Prime when your priority is specifically:
- Focus
- Memory
- Mental clarity
- Broader Lion’s Mane compound coverage
Choose MycoMatrix when you want:
- Six different functional mushrooms
- Broader daily wellness support
- More emphasis on mushroom diversity
- Support extending beyond cognition alone
A simple way to remember it is:
Prime goes deeper into Lion’s Mane. MycoMatrix goes broader across six mushrooms.
Can MycoBrain or Prime be taken with MycoMatrix?
They can often be used together because they serve different purposes. MycoBrain or Prime supplies a more substantial amount of Lion’s Mane, while MycoMatrix provides smaller amounts of six different mushrooms.
However, more is not always necessary.
If you are new to functional mushrooms, begin with the product that most closely matches your main goal. Use it consistently before adding another product. Introducing products one at a time also makes it easier to assess how you respond.
Someone wanting both targeted cognitive support and a broader mushroom blend may choose:
- MycoBrain or MycoBrain Prime as the focused Lion’s Mane product
- MycoMatrix as the broader six-mushroom foundation
Which one should you choose?
Choose MycoBrain if:
You want a focused Lion’s Mane fruiting-body extract for everyday cognitive support.
Choose MycoBrain Prime if:
You want the more comprehensive Lion’s Mane formulation containing both fruiting-body and mycelium extracts.
Choose MycoMatrix if:
You want multiple functional mushrooms in one product and your goals extend beyond cognition alone.
Consider combining them if:
You specifically want concentrated Lion’s Mane alongside a wider mushroom blend—and there is no medical reason for you to avoid either product.
Important safety considerations
Functional mushroom supplements are not intended to diagnose, treat or cure a medical condition, and they should not replace prescribed medication.

- Use medication affecting blood glucose
- Have an autoimmune condition
- Have impaired kidney or liver function
- Are preparing for surgery
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Have a known mushroom allergy
- Use several chronic medications
If you are unsure, send us a list of your medication before ordering. In more complex cases, we may recommend that you discuss the ingredients with your doctor or pharmacist first.
Final answer
There is no single winner between MycoBrain, MycoBrain Prime and MycoMatrix.
- MycoBrain: focused Lion’s Mane from the fruiting body
- MycoBrain Prime: Lion’s Mane fruiting body plus mycelium
- MycoMatrix: six different functional mushrooms for broader support
Start by identifying your main goal. The most targeted product is often a better starting point than taking everything at once.
